A large part of Bel Air Council’s Culture of Life activities revolve around raising funds for local organizations and efforts that support life through special All Night BINGO’s held at our Council hall!
BINGO for Alzheimer’s Association: Bel Air Council hosted a BINGO session specifically to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Association. The Council raised $700 through the BINGO and decided to up the donation to $900. In addition, the Bel Air courcil had a team to participate in the Alzheimer’s Association walk-a-thon and raising another $650 for the cause.
BINGO for Birthright: Initially started in 1968 in Toronto, Canada, Birthright is a pregnancy help center where anyone concerned about an unplanned or untimely pregnancy can find assistance as near as the telephone. Birthright offers services to help the woman with her pregnancy, both materially and through community referrals.
Birthright of Bel Air is staffed by trained volunteers prepared to offer personal, confidential help to those involved, whether they are single or married, regardless of age, race, income, or religion. Together they will assess the situation and explore alternatives available.
Birthright receives no state or federal funding. They operate solely by donations from a few area churches and many individuals. Bel Air Council has been one of the organizations that support this effort.
Bel Air Council hosted an all-night bingo session specifically to raise funds for Birthright of Harford County. The Council raised $1700.
BINGO for the Knights of Columbus Ultrasound Program: A major pro-life program the Knights have developed is our Ultrasound Program. Statistics reveal that most women who consider abortion choose life after seeing an ultrasound image of their child. The Knights of Columbus purchase ultrasound machines for Crisis Pregnancy Centers. Maryland has been very successful already funding nine machines which are in place and saving lives. As of April 2013, Knights of Columbus nation-wide have purchased over 334 ultrasound machines at a cost of over $8.5 million, with additional fund raising campaigns for ultrasound machine purchases either in-progress or to be launched in the near future. The success of this program has enabled us to get the per-unit cost of these machines down to $27,000.
The Knights of Columbus Day of the Unborn Child is observed on the Feast of the Annunciation and is in line with the International Day of the Unborn Child established by Pope John Paul II. Pope John Paul II viewed the day as; “a positive option in favor of life and the spread of a culture for life to guarantee respect for human dignity in every situation.”
We enjoyed talking to a few students as they walked to class or lunch and we appreciated hosting a 9th grade health class as well as students from medical ethics. These small group, short 10 minute, venues allowed wonderful interaction between students and presenters. Many students took a real interest in the Knight’s Ultrasound program and the materials and services presented by Birthright. The cookies provided by Birthright were also quite a hit!
